Good planning and proper packing are the keys to helping make the experience of moving as stress-free as possible.
Below are some tips to help you keep organized and store your belongings safely, economically and efficiently.
Storage Planning List
- Take an inventory of everything you plan to move
- Make a list of the supplies you will need for packing
- Clean and dry things completely before packing
- Drain all fluids from any tools, appliances and machinery such as lawn mowers
- Take photos of any valuables for your insurance company
Packing
- Use boxes of similar size for easy stacking
- Be sure to fill each box fully to prevent areas of collapse
- Wrap breakables individually with bubble wrap, packing paper or newspapers
- Keep a detailed list of what goes into each box
- Label your boxes clearly on one or more sides
- Utilize items such as a washer, refrigerator or empty drawers to store clothes and linens
Storage Tips List
- Place plastic sheeting on the floor or consider using wooden pallets
- Utilize all of the space in your unit by storing vertically when possible and stacking chairs
- Stack lighter boxes on top of heavier ones
- Leave small spaces around boxes and side walls for air ventilation
- In larger units, leave an aisle space down the middle so you can easily reach the contents
- Make sure you can see the box labels easily
- Cover your belongings with a large piece of loosely fitted plastic or mattress / furniture covers
- Use ‘Damp Rid’ or similar non-odor producing mildew and mold preventatives in non-climate-controlled units
- Draw a ‘map’ of your unit to note where specific items are placed
- Never store items that are considered flammable, corrosive or combustible or that will create unpleasant odors, like paint, chemicals or mothballs
